When you try and go low carb, you’ll find there are a number of things you instantly start to miss.
Chief among them for many people?
Bread! Even if you’re not a massive fan of bread on its own, the fact of the matter is that bread is a key part of many great meals. In particular? Sandwiches. How can you live without sandwiches? And how can you make a sandwich without bread?
Well that’s where you may be surprised. Because actually, it is possible to make a sandwich without bread – and in fact, there are a number of different options and ways to do it.
And in this case, we’re going to see how you can make something like a sandwich using lettuce.
And it’s not just sandwiches either: lettuce can replace bread in all manner of scenarios and be used to create fajitas, burgers and wraps!
Rob Riches talks us through how he makes lettuce wraps in this video. He explains how he uses lettuce to wrap together a high-protein meal and at the same time, shows how you can still make something absolutely delicious.
This recipe includes the following ingredients:
- Lean ground turkey
- Shredded carrots and cabbage
- Olive oil
- Cayenne pepper
- Red bell peppers
- Chicken skewers
- Chicken breast
- 2 eggs
- Whole grain bread
- Multi seed crackers
- Red peppers
- Sea salt
- White onion
So that’s quite the laundry list of ingredients but really there are only two here that really count: lettuce and turkey! If you wanted to, you could just wrap the turkey and be done with it.
But that wouldn’t be very fun or very tasty…
So instead, add some olive oil to your pan and then spoon in your ground turkey. Let it cook until brown and shred up your carrot and cabbage along with the white onion, red pepper etc. Avocado is also a great addition to help add some more fat.
Rob takes this moment to explain that he adds the cheese and avocado to make sure that he’s still hitting the same number of calories. Cutting carbs is one thing but if you miss out on the calories you’ll still end up hungry and weak. You need to provide your body with enough energy but just force it to use fat instead of sugar.
Once you’ve sliced and diced your veg, simply throw it into a separate pan and keep cooking. Take your squares of low fat cheese and add to the meat along with some seasoning.
Once it’s all finished cooking, all you need to do is turn off and warp your key ingredients into the lettuce. Just twist out the stalk and take the biggest leaves from the outside to hold your food in. Just make sure you cool your wraps first to harden up the cheese and fix the wraps in place. If you try and eat it now, you’re going to end up with some molten meat on your lap!
