DIM Supplement for Men Over 50: Hormones, Prostate, and Vitality

Short Answer

Should a man over 50 take DIM? It’s a reasonable thing to try only after the basics, and only with blood work. DIM reliably changes how your body breaks down estrogen. It has not been shown to raise testosterone, improve libido or energy, protect bone, or prevent prostate problems in healthy older men.

The detail that matters most after 50: DIM has anti-androgen activity in the prostate and can lower your PSA reading. A lower PSA on DIM does not mean a healthier prostate — it can make the screening test less reliable. Get a baseline PSA before you start, and tell your doctor you take DIM before any future test.

If your PSA is rising, you have urinary symptoms, or you take finasteride, dutasteride, TRT or blood thinners, talk to your doctor before taking DIM.

Most articles about DIM for older men make the same promises: more testosterone, better libido, a healthier prostate. Very little of that has been tested in men over 50 — and one of the effects that has been measured, a drop in PSA, is more of a warning than a benefit.

This guide sets out what DIM actually does, what the prostate trials found, how it interacts with the medications common at this age, and when a doctor’s visit should come before a supplement.

There’s a lot to weigh here, but for men over 50 it comes down to a few points worth remembering.

Key Takeaways
  • DIM changes how estrogen is broken down. That’s its one well-proven effect — it is not an estrogen blocker.
  • It can lower your PSA reading. Get a baseline PSA first and tell your doctor you take DIM before any future test.
  • No trial shows it raises testosterone, libido or energy in men over 50, or that it prevents prostate problems.
  • Check medications first, especially finasteride, dutasteride, TRT, tamoxifen and blood thinners.
  • A rising PSA or urinary symptoms need a doctor, not a supplement.
  • Weight loss, sleep and strength training move hormones more than any capsule.
  • If you try DIM, use 100–200 mg with food and retest after 8–12 weeks.

What actually changes in men’s hormones after 50

Hormones shift gradually with age, but the change is smaller and slower than supplement marketing suggests.

MarkerTypical change with ageWhy it matters
Total testosteroneSlow, gradual decline from middle ageOften stays in the normal range, especially in lean, healthy men
SHBGRisesBinds more testosterone, so less is available to tissues
Free testosteroneFalls faster than totalTracks symptoms better than total testosterone
EstradiolFairly stable; higher with more body fatNeeded for bone, libido and body composition
Body fatTends to increase, especially around the waistFat tissue converts testosterone to estradiol and drives insulin resistance
?

How common is “andropause”?

Less common than you’ve probably read. The large European Male Ageing Study found true late-onset hypogonadism — consistently low testosterone plus sexual symptoms — in about 2% of men aged 40–79, rising to around 5% in men in their 70s.

Many symptoms blamed on hormones in your 50s turn out to be weight gain, poor sleep, sleep apnea, medications or low mood. That’s why the first step after 50 is a blood test, not a supplement.

What DIM does — and what it doesn’t

DIM (3,3′-diindolylmethane) forms in your stomach when you eat cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage and Brussels sprouts. A supplement delivers far more than food can.

Its one well-documented effect is shifting estrogen breakdown toward the weaker 2-hydroxyestrone pathway and away from the more active 16α-hydroxyestrone. That shift has been reproduced in several human studies.

What it has not been shown to do in men:

  • Block aromatase. DIM is not an aromatase inhibitor. Your body may make just as much estradiol on DIM as before.
  • Free up testosterone. In the only controlled trial measuring SHBG, 300 mg of DIM daily for 12 months raised SHBG by roughly 25 nmol/L versus about 1 nmol/L on placebo. Those participants were women on tamoxifen, so men may respond differently — but a rise like that in a man would lower free testosterone, not raise it.
  • Improve the testosterone-to-estrogen ratio. No published trial has measured this in healthy men. We cover this in our article on DIM and the T:E ratio.

DIM and your PSA test — read this before you start

This is the most important section for men over 50, and the one most DIM articles leave out.

PSA (prostate-specific antigen) is made by prostate cells under the influence of androgens. DIM acts as an anti-androgen: in lab studies it blocked DHT from binding to the androgen receptor and reduced PSA production in prostate cancer cells. In a trial of men with prostate cancer taking an absorption-enhanced DIM before surgery, 96% showed the androgen receptor shut out of the cell nucleus, and PSA fell in 71%.

That means a lower PSA on DIM tells you DIM is acting on the test — not that your prostate is healthier, and not that cancer has been ruled out.

You may see a case report of a 78-year-old man whose PSA fell from 4.6 to 2.4 ng/mL on 100 mg of DIM a day. He had a rising PSA and declined a biopsy, so nobody knows what was causing it. As a single, uncontrolled case, it shows DIM can lower a PSA number — which is exactly the problem.

Your situationWhat to do
Thinking about starting DIMGet a baseline PSA first, so you have a clean reading
Already taking DIM and due a PSA testTell your doctor; the result may read lower than it otherwise would
PSA is risingSee your doctor or a urologist. Don’t use DIM to bring the number down
PSA fell after starting DIMDon’t treat it as reassurance; discuss it with your doctor
Taking finasteride or dutasterideThese already lower PSA substantially; adding DIM makes results harder to read. Ask first
Diagnosed with prostate cancerUse DIM only under your oncology team’s guidance

The prostate: what the trials actually found

DIM has been studied as a possible prostate cancer agent, almost entirely in men who already had cancer:

  • Phase I dose-escalation trial in men with recurrent prostate cancer: DIM was well tolerated. One patient had a 50% PSA drop and one stabilised; the rest progressed. The authors described the efficacy as modest.
  • Placebo-controlled trial before prostatectomy (45 men): DIM reached the blood but did not consistently build up in prostate tissue or change cancer biomarkers. The only significant change was in the urinary estrogen metabolite ratio.
  • Single-arm trial before prostatectomy (28 evaluable men): DIM reached prostate tissue and showed anti-androgen activity, with PSA falling in most men.

None of these tested whether DIM prevents prostate cancer or helps benign prostate enlargement (BPH) in healthy men. Eating plenty of cruciferous vegetables is linked with lower prostate cancer risk in population studies, which is a good reason to eat them — but it is not proof that a DIM capsule does the same.

Testosterone, libido and energy after 50

There is no trial showing DIM raises testosterone, libido or energy in men over 50. The theory — less estrogen, more testosterone — runs into two problems: DIM doesn’t block aromatase, and its anti-androgen activity points the other way.

If your libido, erections or energy have dropped, a doctor’s workup is more useful than a supplement. Common causes after 50 include low testosterone, thyroid problems, poor sleep or sleep apnea, depression, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and medications such as some blood pressure drugs, antidepressants and opioids.

Bone health: why men over 50 need estrogen

Estradiol is one of the main hormones protecting bone in men. In a controlled study of 400 men, suppressing estradiol increased body fat and worsened sexual function — the opposite of what most men want.

DIM has no bone-density data in men. The useful takeaway is a caution: don’t take products that aim to push estrogen as low as possible. Weight-bearing exercise, enough protein, calcium from food, and correcting vitamin D deficiency have much stronger evidence for bone.

!Talk to your doctor before taking DIM if you:

  • Have a rising PSA, urinary symptoms, or a family history of prostate cancer
  • Have been diagnosed with prostate cancer or are on hormone therapy for it
  • Take finasteride or dutasteride for an enlarged prostate or hair loss
  • Are on TRT — see our guide to DIM and TRT
  • Take blood thinners, tamoxifen, or medications processed by the liver
  • Are trying to conceive (animal data showed dose-dependent harm to sperm quality)

DIM dosage for men over 50

No dose of DIM has been established for hormone balance in healthy older men. Human studies have used 100–450 mg a day, mostly in people with cancer.

  • If you try it: many people start at 100 mg a day for two to three weeks, then settle at 200 mg. Neither is a proven effective dose.
  • Take it with food that contains some fat. DIM is fat-soluble and absorbs poorly on its own.
  • Avoid high doses. There’s no evidence that more than 200–300 mg helps healthy men, and animal data on sperm quality argue against pushing higher.
  • Common side effects: darker urine, mild headache and an upset stomach in the first couple of weeks. Stop if they don’t settle.

Get tested first

Test before you start and again after 8–12 weeks. After 50, PSA belongs on the panel.

MarkerWhy it’s on the panel
PSATest firstA clean baseline before DIM can affect it
Total testosteroneYour baseline reference point
Free testosteroneWhat your tissues can use; tracks symptoms better than total
SHBGRises with age and may rise further on DIM
Estradiol — sensitive (LC-MS/MS)Standard assays are unreliable at the low levels normal in men
TSHThyroid problems mimic low-testosterone symptoms
HbA1c or fasting glucoseInsulin resistance is closely tied to low testosterone

Draw blood in the morning, fasted, at the same lab each time. One low testosterone result isn’t a diagnosis — guidelines require consistently low readings on at least two occasions. Our testosterone calculator can help you put results in context.

What moves hormones more than DIM after 50

These have far stronger evidence than any supplement:

  • Lose excess body fat. In a meta-analysis of diet and surgery studies, testosterone rose with weight loss, and the more weight men lost, the more it rose.
  • Sleep 7–9 hours — and get checked for sleep apnea. One week of 5-hour nights cut testosterone by 10–15% in young men. Sleep apnea is common after 50 and strongly linked to low testosterone.
  • Lift weights 2–4 times a week. It protects muscle and bone and improves insulin sensitivity, which matters more with every decade.
  • Cut heavy drinking. Regular heavy drinking lowers testosterone and disrupts sleep.
  • Review your medications with your doctor. Several common drugs affect testosterone and libido.

We rank each of these by evidence in our guide to natural hormone balance for men.

Frequently asked questions

Is DIM good for the prostate after 50?

It hasn’t been shown to prevent prostate cancer or ease BPH in healthy men. It can lower PSA through an anti-androgen effect, which may make screening less reliable. Get a baseline PSA first and tell your doctor you take it.

Can DIM lower my PSA?

Yes, it can. In a trial of men with prostate cancer, PSA fell in most of them on DIM. A lower number on DIM doesn’t mean your prostate is healthier, and it doesn’t rule out cancer.

Will DIM raise my testosterone at 50+?

There’s no evidence it does. DIM doesn’t block aromatase, and in the only controlled trial it raised SHBG, which would lower free testosterone. Weight loss, sleep and strength training have much better evidence.

Can I take DIM with finasteride or dutasteride?

Ask your doctor first. Both drugs already lower PSA substantially, and adding DIM can make your PSA results harder to interpret.

Is DIM safe with blood thinners?

Check with your doctor. DIM affects liver enzymes that process many medications, so your doctor may want to monitor you more closely.

How much DIM should a man over 50 take?

No dose is established for healthy older men. If you try it, 100–200 mg a day with food is a common range; there’s no evidence that higher doses help.

How long until I notice a difference?

Estrogen metabolite changes appear within weeks, but you may not feel anything. Judge it on an 8–12 week retest, not on how you feel.

Is broccoli as good as a DIM supplement?

Food gives you far less DIM than a capsule, but cruciferous vegetables are linked with lower prostate cancer risk in population studies and are worth eating regardless.

There’s a lot to weigh here, but for men over 50 it comes down to a few points worth remembering.

The bottom line

DIM is a real compound with one well-documented effect: it changes how your body breaks down estrogen. For men over 50, it is not a testosterone booster, not a prostate treatment, and not a substitute for screening.

If you want to try it, do it in the right order: get a PSA and hormone panel first, fix the basics, take a modest dose with food, and retest after 8–12 weeks. And if your PSA is rising or your symptoms are significant, start with your doctor.

Medical note: This article is educational and is not medical advice. Speak with your doctor before starting any supplement, especially if you take prescription medication, have prostate symptoms or a rising PSA, or are on TRT.
